Cancellations or itinerary modifications due to operational issues
Refunds and exchanges
If your departure has been cancelled due to a change in our services, we will automatically reimburse passengers who have a one-way ticket. If your ticket includes an additional segment (round-trip) which date falls after the train cancellation dates, you will be contacted by one of our agents to let us know if you wish to cancel only one part or all your trip with us.
Your refund will be handled by our team, so there's no need to reach out to our Customer Centre. Please note that processing times may vary based on the number of affected passengers.
If your train is cancelled after 6:00 PM (ET) the day prior to your departure or on the day of travel, you will receive a travel credit representing 100% of the fare price paid (before taxes) in addition to your full refund.
If VIA Rail modifies your trip (schedule or seat assignment changes), you will receive an email informing you of the upcoming changes.
Please note that only travel segments booked together in a single transaction on the VIA Rail website are considered guaranteed connections. If you book travel segments separately and miss a connection, you will not be eligible to compensation of any kind. For clarity, guaranteed connections refer to connecting trains that can be purchased in a single booking on Via Rail's website, covering multiple city pairs.
